Xanothomas is a skin condition where soft yellow-colored fat builds up right under the surface of the skin in little nodules or larger. The size varies; some are very small while others grow into large tuber-like shapes. They may appear anywhere on the body but are most seen on the eyelids, elbows, knees, hands and feet. Although they are painless, benign growths, they are indicative of high blood lipid levels (cholesterol or triglyceride) that require treatment.
In some cases, the nodules appear simply from the high blood lipid levels. In other cases, they appear because of an underlying medical condition that increases blood lipids, such as certain cancers, diabetes or cirrhosis of the liver. In the regular treatment of these conditions, cholesterol and/or triglyceride levels can be lowered and the nodules will disappear. In either case, they indicate a systemic condition that needs treatment.
Those with this condition are usually directed to begin an exercise program as part of long-term management of blood lipid levels. Pedorthists help with making sure they are in footwear that makes exercising and general activities most comfortable.
