Definition: Velcro closures replace lacing and buckling on shoes. These come in single, double and triple closures, depending on the shoes. Although some wear the shoes for style, they are excellent for those with disability issues, dexterity problems (such as from a stroke) or with memory problems (such as Alzheimer’s or dementia).
Since Velcro is a brand name, some stores or catalogs refer to these as “Hook and Loop” closures.
Benefits: Those with the health issues mentioned above – and their caregivers – find Velcro closures easier to put on than laces, enabling a little more independent function.
