Personal Stride Component in Shoe

Definition: The term personal stride component is a concept used in athletic shoe jargon.  It refers to the shape, construction, brand and style of a shoe that is most beneficial to getting the foot to toe off at the great toe (big toe).  Wearing a shoe that is compatible with one’s stride component is necessary to maintaining ankle, knee and hip function, not just foot function.  It is of particular importance for those who participate in high impact sports. There is much more stress on the foot and shoe in these activities.

Determination of one’s stride type is first determined by whether the feet are flat, medium or high.  Next comes choosing the shoe last (shape) that is best for the arch type.  Determining which shoe brand and style is best done by someone trained in those areas.  Some shoe makers, such as New Balance and Brooks, do a good job on their websites showing which of their styles match the various foot types.  However, for best results, a retailer or Certified Pedorthist with an understanding of stride components will be able to give an objective and knowledgeable assessment of the best match of shape, style and brand.  For those who enjoy high impact and recreational activities, it is well worth the time to seek and receive this input.

Benefits: Wearing a shoe that is compatible with one’s personal stride is necessary for those engaging in high impact activities to best support their feet, lower extremities and reduce toe and foot injury.
