Definition: A firm heel counter is found when you press at the bottom of the heel counter and it is very firm to the touch. It can be soft and pliable at the top of the counter and still be firm at the bottom. A firm heel counter reduces lateral (left to right) motion and helps keep the foot going forward while walking. An extended medial counter is a firm heel counter that extends down to about the middle of the shoe.
Benefits: Lateral movement causes stress on the heel and disturbs forward motion. Firm and extended medial counters keep the foot moving forward. Soft heel counters are particularly detrimental to those with flat feet and overpronaters.
