Definition: In the blucher shoe, the quarter overlaps the vamp, making it easier for a foot that is narrow, has a high instep or is swollen to enter and stay in the shoe. There is more adjustability than in a Balmoral shoe since the opening is not sewn down to the shoe. The lacing or Velcro can be pulled tighter or loosened up as necessary.
If a swollen foot cannot get into a Blucher shoe, the next step is to go to a Chukka shoe.
Benefits: Getting into and staying in shoes is more difficult for those with narrow feet, high insteps or swollen feet and ankles. Blucher shoe openings provide better opportunity to fit these type feet than a Balmoral shoe.
