Definition: There are 2 types of openings at the midfoot and lacing areas of shoes: One is a Balmoral construction and the other is Blucher. The opening in a Balmoral shoe is sewn down, making a fixed circumference at that part of the shoe. It works best for those without a high instep or with swelling problems. Being aware of the difference in lacing construction and the different foot types is important for diabetics – and those who fit shoes for diabetics – as when a shoe is too tight in that area, there is the risk of creating breaks in the skin.
Benefits: The Balmoral shoe opening is best for those who do not have a high instep, narrow feet or feet that swell because there is very little adjustability in the lacing area. Blucher shoes provide better opportunity to fit than Balmoral for those with these foot types.
