Toe Separators and Toe Spreaders

Definition: Toe separators and spreaders are for those whose with overlapping or cross-over toes, toes that rub together and cause skin breaks and for those with bunions.  Some wear them all the time and others wear them while engaged in recreational activities, such as running, where there is repeated force and impact.  They come in gel, foam and rubber materials.  Some brands call them separators and others spreaders and you have to see the package to be sure you are getting what you need.

Toe Separators

Toe Spreaders

The round spreaders go best between the 1st and 2nd toes and are commonly too big to go between the other toes.  They can help ease some of the discomfort of those with bunions.  The thinner ones can go in the 1st and 2nd space also but are usually worn in between the other toes.  Most come in small, medium and large sizes.  They can also be easily cut down to fit if they are too large.

Benefits: When there is soreness, blistering and/or ingrown toenails, separators provide relief, protection and prevent escalation of the condition.  They are particularly important for diabetics whose toes rub or cross over because ulcers can develop in these areas if the rubbing breakes the skin.
