Definition: Claw, hammer and mallet toes cause pressure and rubbing on the plantar aspect (bottom) of the toes. Toe crests fit between the ball of the foot and the toes and allow the toes to land in a more normal fashion, relieving pain and rubbing.
Toe crests are made of gel or suede and those who use them usually prefer one or the other material. Toe crests come in left and right, small, medium and large. Not all packages are clearly marked as left and right so the retailer needs to check to be sure the correct size and foot are ordered or sold.
Benefits: These devices relieve pressure and pain, prevent blistering and make walking more comfortable. Those with diabetes who have claw, hammer or mallet toes are especially vulnerable to ulcerating in these areas and these devices help prevent their development.
