Moisture Wicking Socks

Definition: Moisture wicking socks are made of materials that allow moisture to move away from the foot, reducing friction, heat and bacteria.  There are different brand name materials used.  Common names are CoolMax, MedDry, etc.  The best way to know if socks are moisture wicking is to look at the label on the packaging.

Moisture wicking socks are made of a combination of natural and synthetic materials.  They will not be made entirely of natural materials, such as cotton or wool, because those materials retain moisture instead of repelling it.

These kinds of socks can be, and are, used by athletes, hikers, skiers, diabetics and others with fungal or skin conditions brought on by heat and moisture.  Most diabetic socks (except those made of 100% cotton or wool) include this feature.

Benefits: Many detrimental foot conditions come about when there is too much moisture, friction and bacteria in shoes.  Moisture wicking socks reduce the incidence and aid in healing.
