Definition: Lateral and medial flares are external additions to the shoe where the sole of the shoe is extended outward. It is used when overpronating or oversupinating is so extreme that the foot falls over medially (inside) or laterally (outside) causing damage to the shoe far beyond what normal wear would. This affects the person with the condition financially as shoes must be replaced every few months, but also in terms of stability and long term foot health.
Without flare
With flare
Benefits: Flaring is an excellent solution for those with extreme oversupination and overpronation. The materials required for it are light and add only minimal weight to the shoe. The added base on the shoe gives stability to the foot while standing and walking. Those with this condition find their shoes last much longer when flares are added.
