Definition: A hammer toe splint is used to pull the hammer toe straight down so it will lay as flat it would were it not a hammer toe. This allows the person to wear shoes that otherwise rub on top of the toe and/or to stop the rubbing on the bottoms of the toe. Elastic bands hold the toe down and can be placed to cover the corn on the toe as well as pull the toe down, providing protection at that spot. The bands are adjustable. They come in a single band up to 3 bands.
Some find these comfortable and use them regularly. Others find the padding under the foot uncomfortable. Since a hammertoe involves having a shortened tendon (under the toe) and a lax tendon on top, pulling the toe down with the elastic strap can be too harsh for the shortened tendon, causing pain, so some are unable to wear them for this reason.
Benefits: For those who find them comfortable, the Budin splint provides the wearer with the ability to wear shoes they would not wear otherwise and they can relieve rubbing on the top and bottom of the toe.
