Crush Box

Definition: A crush box is a cardboard box filled with a foam substance that is used to take foot impressions for custom arch supports.  The impression is usually taken sitting down after determining the ankle is in subtalar neutral (a neutral position).

Plaster is poured into the foam impression and from there the arch support is fabricated.

Benefits: This is an easy way to take an impression for custom arch supports.  It is quick, inexpensive and if the ankle is in subtalar neutral and the foot evenly pushed down into the box, it creates a good impression for the technician making the device.
