Definition: Bunion shields protect the bunion area from rubbing on the shoe, reducing the irritation that it can create for the joint and the skin.

Bunion shields do not stop the pain or prevent the bunion from becoming more of a deformity. They add bulk within the shoe that can exacerbate the problem; if the skin and joint are irritated and rubbing against the shoe already, adding bulk will increase that irritation. Bunions are effectively dealt with by using orthotics with a metatarsal lift worn in shoes that are wide enough to accommodate the bunion. Spot stretching the shoe at the bunion area will often make shoes comfortable. Choosing shoes with stretchable uppers and without seams on the vamp are important for those with bunions.
Benefits: Some people swear by these devices and interestingly, they usually wear shoes that are extremely soft so that the bulk of the shield is easily accommodated. As discussed above, it is altogether better to address the situation with arch supports, the right kind of shoes and spot stretching of shoes.
