Definition: Toe fillers are supports made for those with with amputated toes or portions of the foot to fill in where the toe or foot is missing. Missing toes or any missing part of the foot compromises balance and gait. Toe fillers help return part of the missing foot motion, creating better stability and gait.
Toe fillers are custom made for each individual, created from a negative impression of the foot. Toe fillers are most commonly needed by diabetic amputees, although not exclusively. They are covered with plastazote, the material used for diabetic insoles.
Benefits: Toe fillers allow those with amputated digits and/or parts of the foot to wear regular shoes and to approximate full foot motion in gait. The plastazote material protects the wound area from shearing and other friction that could break the skin or cause infections.
