SMART Orthotic Study

In 2004, Smart Feet (then called Foot Efx), BioOrthotics International and the Nursing Department at Armstrong Atlantic State University, worked together in a study on the effect of arch supports on balance in older adults.  For her master’s degree thesis project, Deborah Mulford, RN,  gave a group of seniors various physical tests related to balance.  A baseline was created and the participants provided with BioOrthotics Exercising Support with Metatarsal Lift.  At the end of the study, the results were significant for objective improvement in the physical tests as well as the subjective responses of increased comfort and desire to be more active.  Ms. Mulford not only obtained her master’s degree but went on to get the study published, something not easily accomplished by a master’s degree candidate.  The strong scientific research methods passed muster in the scientific community.

To us at Smart Feet, the conclusions gave scientific validation of what we knew to be true from our own experience:  The BioOrthotic supports improve balance and comfort and decrease pain.  There is a desire to be physically active because the supports make being active much more comfortable.

The following is the entire thesis:

Arch Support Use for Improving Balance and Comfort in Older Adults
