Although there are many fine golf shoes on the market and some come in multiple widths, a common complaint we receive is how difficult it is for some golfers to find comfortable shoes. What they do is wear their favorite athletic or walking shoe, playing without the benefit of cleats. They do this to play comfortably, but as any golfer will tell you, anything that can reduce the total strokes (even if it is only 1 stroke!) is worth its weight in gold!!! Cleats help with stability and balance during the swing and they definitely contribute to keeping the strokes down.
Many don’t know there are 2 ways to put cleats on nearly any shoe. One way is to have a shoe repairman (or repairwoman) add them. The other is a slip-on product called “Insta Cleats”.
Insta Cleats can go on any shoe. They slip over the sole of your shoe and you can put them on and take them off at will. This is their site: www.instagolfshoes.com.
If you are going to have the cleats added to the shoe, you want to find out if the repairman will only work with leather soles or if they will also put them on molded soles (most athletic shoes have molded or unisole soles). Not all repairman want to work with the molded soles.
We have 3 listed shops below that will add cleats to your shoes. You can also call shoe repairs shops in your area or do an Internet search. You may have to mail your shoes off if there isn’t anyone in your area. Either way, discuss what you want with the person who will do the work so you are both clear on what will be done, the time frame and pricing. Expect to pay $75-85 per pair.
Here are two sites and one telephone number of those we know do this work:
Jay Flowers 843 662-9920
With these options, there is no reason to play golf in uncomfortable shoes and add unnecessary strokes to your game!
